2008 Bearded Iris Price List: A - LBearded Iris Culture The Best Time to divide and plant Bearded Iris is July, August and September. Keep Bearded iris dry until after planting then soak well, continuing every few days, if no rain, to get the roots started and new green foliage. It is better to plant when you receive. If unable to plant, keep in dry cool place until you can plant, a week or a bit longer will work. Irises that you receive should bloom the following spring after planting, as with any flower, rarely they may not. They need at least 5 to 6 hours a day or full sun. Bone Meal is perfect to plant with, working into soil around each iris. Avoid nitrogen, the first number on your fertilizer bag. Nitrogen can rot your rhizomes. If your weather is hot and humid as ours is, please no nitrogen. They can survive without nitrogen, took me a long time to realize that after rotting too many. In areas where you don’t have humidity still use low nitrogen such as #5, keeping away from rhizomes, and high on the last two numbers but definitely no nitrogen in the fall. Bearded Irises are very easy to grow in raised beds. Reasons for no bloom are not enough sun, planted too deep, soil not worked for long periods of time and iris need 25% oxygen (loose soil) for best results. Mound iris, planting bearded iris with the top of the rhizome barely showing and the roots well covered. Do not mulch. Bearded iris like clean beds! You may mulch between iris but only in the very late Fall and then remove from plants the first of March or later in colder zones. I let nature cover with leaves in the fall and winter, knowing that nature does a lot better than I can. Irises love cold weather and do require some for good bloom!
